Dr. Babson and Dr. Edgren are certified to perform physicals of all classes as determined by the Federal Aviation Administration. For private pilots, the FAA requires you have a physical before flying solo in an airplane, helicopter, or airship. The FAA suggests you get your medical certificate before beginning flight training.

The FAA divides the physicals into the following classifications : first-class, second-class, or third-class. Generally, first-class is designated for the airline transport pilot; second-class for the commercial pilot; and third-class for the student, recreational and private pilot.
